A bitter civil war from a world of magic has spilled over into the small California town of San Luis Obispo. In a desperate act, a warrior from the world of Ruach gives soul armors—the ultimate weapons of his world—to four high school students.

This sounds like the exact opposite of how Vero would like to spend her senior year. Poor and new to the area, she finds surviving in her new surroundings hard enough without stepping into the middle of a war of wizards.

Unfortunately, two soldiers from the other world know what she looks like and want her dead. In the small town of San Luis Obispo, it’s only a matter of time before they find her. She might have to fight, whether she wants to or not.

Interesting premise. Although characters must develop at their own pace, the characters would have been sharing what they discovered. What Vero intuited at the beach, about her connection to fire, should have had the others experimenting trying to find their elemental link, or similar. Only having Vero, picking up on her link to fire, and in training, sensing her axe guiding her how to strike is too myopic. Gloria, is told she is a healer. She also seems to be able to affect plant life. Maybe having her feel the healing properties of some plants, and have her start to understand she could draw strength from them. Neil should also be picking up on the clues. If his weapon or soul shield is weak. Pieter should also be pissing the others off with his attitude.
Still I look forward to seeing how you build these characters.

The Rift Volume 1 JT Stoll 9780692452332 Books Reviews

The RIft was an engaging read from the beginning to the end.I enjoyed all the characters in the book and the story left me wanting to know more about each one of the 4 teens as well as the land where James came from. The ending was a bit abrupt after the fight with Jen. I did enjoy reading this book and am ready to read the next book in the series.
Enjoyable read, have always loved stories with people thrown out of their element. Whether it's people from our modern world transported to a world that didn't exist or having that world come to them in their everyday life. Looking forward to reading the other books!
This was a fun, if relevantly short, read. Nice world building and magic system, very good lead characters with logical flaws and realistic interaction with each other and the world around them. Well written. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
Just finished this and it is definitely a fun read. Seems like there is a lot more coming judging by the ending, and I am looking forward to it. Stoll does a great job developing a set of characters, an interesting plot, and a new "universe" while hooking you to want more. I will definitely grab the next book in this series when it comes out.

It should be mentioned that this is more of a novella than a novel, so it is perfect if you are looking for a weekend read but don't want a huge commitment.
I don't read a lot of YA (because I'm not a YA) but the plot line intrigued me and it was a free offering.

The magic and scifi aspects of the book were well laid out; and even though the book was short, we got a good glimpse into what makes the characters tick.

It was a fast, enjoyable read and does make me want to see what happens next.
I liked the premise. Four high school kids receive magic armor & weapons from a dying knight from another dimension. However, the book was very short and there was not a lot of character development. I didn't feel "connected" to the main character of Vero or her friends. I felt the author could have spent more time on the kids learning how to use their armor and weapons and really had some fun, but that chapter was too short as well. There is potential here though, so I will probably check out the second book in the series.
This is an entertaining YA fantasy read that I finished in less than 24 hours. It is a page turner, and it is very short, ending much sooner in the plot line than I expected it to. This is in part a good sign because it shows that it was good enough that I really wanted the sequel to already be available and a somewhat bad sign that I didn't recognize the climax of the book as such.

My favorite feature is how the four main characters have flaws/quirks that serve as both strengths and weaknesses and that often put even those on the "same side" at odds with one another. It makes it a more interesting read than your typical YA book. That being said, the Ruachian (i.e. from the alternate universe) characters are pretty one-dimensional, particularly the villains (though the author hints at possible complexity to come)

The main characters are definitely high school students. This was at times annoying but not enough to prevent me as an adult from enjoying the book, and it helped with the realism of the book. More annoying was the occasional moments where one of the high school students would be spontaneously deep in their observations that did not fit with their character development. It seemed more like the author wanted some information given to the reader rather than a natural maturation of the character. There were other mature/deep moments that seemed to naturally develop out of who the characters were and what they went through, but the few that didn't stuck out like a sore thumb.

On a side note, the book required some majored suspension of disbelief regarding how law enforcement responded (or didn't respond) to the teenagers' actions. The author mainly avoids describing this part.

Overall, it was a good quick read that was worth the time to read it, and I will be looking for the next book in the series.
